Haututu Product Development & the $50 Challenge
Creativity, Innovation, and a Bit of Hustle
The $50 Challenge is a signature part of our Haututu product development stream at Tāiki e!. Rangatahi are given a simple brief: take $50 and a few weeks to turn it into something real. Whether it’s a product, a prototype, or something ready for the market, it’s all about using creativity, hands-on skills, and a touch of hustle.
With access to laser cutters, 3D printers, recycled materials, and a supportive environment full of mentors and peers, rangatahi get the chance to explore what it means to bring an idea to life. It’s not just about the outcome — it’s about the process of designing, testing, making, and expressing your ideas.
Some of the standout products created so far include:
- Coastie Coasters – laser-cut wooden coasters celebrating the iconic State Highway 35 sign and maps of Tairāwhiti communities
- Cellphone Retreat Boxes – marae-inspired laser-cut boxes where phones “go to rest” during meetings and hui to reduce distractions
- Toitū Te Tiriti Upcycled Fashion – repurposed clothing with bold messaging around Te Tiriti o Waitangi, identity, and resistance
- Rāumati Sunnies & Merch – summer-ready sunglasses and gear designed with local flair and rangatahi style
- Modern Māori Art with LED Lighting – striking laser-cut wall pieces blending contemporary Māori design with soft, ambient lighting
- Gizzy Photo Frames – creative frames that showcase Gisborne pride with references to local spots, humour, and vibe
For many rangatahi, the $50 Challenge is their first taste of product development or entrepreneurship — and the creativity they bring to it is next level. Every round delivers something new, with plenty of learning (and laughs) along the way.
