Over the past few years, Tāiki e! has hosted more than 10 Rangatahi Markets in Tairāwhiti — with each one showcasing up to 20 rangatahi entrepreneurs who are stepping up, standing out, and showing us what’s possible when young people are given the space to thrive.

The markets aren’t just about making sales — they’re about making a statement. A statement that our rangatahi are creators, innovators, and leaders in their own right. From handcrafted jewellery and laser-cut artwork to upcycled fashion, skincare, homewares, kai, and custom merch, the range of products on offer is consistently impressive — often outshining the work of adults in similar spaces.

These markets offer real-world experience: pricing, branding, pitching, handling money, engaging with customers — all in an environment built on support and whanaungatanga. Many of the vendors are first-timers, and for some, it’s the spark that leads to ongoing businesses or creative careers.

But it’s not just about the stalls. The markets have also become a platform for rangatahi musicians and performers. It’s all part of creating a positive, uplifting space where youth can express their full selves — and the community gets to celebrate them for it.

The Rangatahi Market kaupapa flips the narrative — showing our youth not as problems to be solved, but as powerful contributors with fresh ideas, creative energy, and serious talent.
